The problem you will help solve
K4M2 AI has to be commercially serious and institutionally honest at the same time. That tension is mostly a technical leadership problem: which engagements we take, which systems we productise, what we open source, how we evaluate what we ship, and how we say no under revenue pressure. This role holds that line while building a technical organisation capable of delivering without heroics.
What you will do
Own the technical direction
Architecture, build-versus-buy, model strategy, and the reusable platform beneath client work.
Build the engineering organisation
Hire, set the bar, define levels, and create a review culture where disagreement is expected rather than tolerated.
Set the evaluation standard
Decide what evidence a system must produce before it reaches production, and enforce it when a deadline argues otherwise.
Turn engagements into products
Recognise the recurring implementation problem worth productising, and kill the ones that are not.
Hold the refusal line
Apply the Responsible AI Standard to live commercial decisions, including the ones that cost revenue.
Represent the work publicly
Technical writing, open source, and client conversations at the level where architecture and commitment meet.
What we are looking for
You have led engineering organisations through the stage where informal process stops working. Deep production ML or AI systems experience, current enough to have opinions about evaluation and retrieval that you can defend. Evidence of hiring well and of managing people out fairly. The willingness to write down what the company will not do, and to be quoted on it later.
We care more about the quality of your judgement and your work than about polished self-presentation. Send evidence.
Helps, but not essential
What we will tell you honestly
This is an early-stage company. Priorities move, revenue is uneven, and several policies referenced across this site are intentions rather than established practice. Authority is real but shared: some decisions remain with the founders, the board, and the Foundation. You should ask us exactly which ones before you accept.
Compensation and participation
The range for this role, the employment or contracting structure, and any equity or profit participation are shared in the first conversation and documented before work begins. We will not describe a role as senior to attract stronger candidates while offering junior authority.
