The problem you will help solve
Every engagement produces a pattern that looks like a product. Most of them are not. The value of this role is discrimination: seeing which recurring problem is worth building once and selling many times, which belongs in open source, and which should stay a bespoke system for one client. Getting that wrong quietly wastes a year.
What you will do
Run discovery that ends in a decision
Frame the problem, size the value, and produce a recommendation someone can act on, including "do not build this".
Connect delivery to product
Watch what recurs across engagements and make the case for productising it, or for leaving it alone.
Define what "working" means
Success criteria, evaluation measures, and the conditions under which we would call a product a failure.
Write the thinking down
Positioning, product narratives, and research notes clear enough for a client executive and an engineer to read the same document.
Price and package honestly
Help shape commercial models that do not depend on the client misunderstanding what they are buying.
Keep the mission legible
Ensure product decisions can be explained against our published commitments, not only against a revenue target.
What we are looking for
Experience owning product direction in a technical environment, with enough depth in AI systems to know what is genuinely hard. Strong written reasoning, you can distinguish evidence from confidence, and you show your working. Comfortable in front of clients and inside a codebase discussion. A record of killing your own ideas when the evidence turned.
We care more about the quality of your judgement and your work than about polished self-presentation. Send evidence.
Helps, but not essential
What we will tell you honestly
This role has influence rather than command. You will make recommendations that get overruled, and you will spend real time on discovery work that ends in a recommendation not to build. Product direction at this stage changes more often than anyone would like.
Compensation and participation
The range for this role, the employment or contracting structure, and any equity or profit participation are shared in the first conversation and documented before work begins. We will not describe a role as senior to attract stronger candidates while offering junior authority.
